Caique Parrot Appearance & Identification

Caique parrot are medium-small parrots with short tails and striking color patterns. The two most common types are the Black-Headed Caique and the White-Bellied Caique.

Green-Thighed / White-Bellied Caiques  Characteristics

  • Bright orange-yellow head and vent
  • White or off-white belly
  • Green wings, thighs, and back
  • Bluish primary feathers
  • Pinkish-horn colored beak
  • Pinkish legs and feet

Wild Caiques often have white breast feathers stained a chestnut-brown color, known as isobel staining. This is believed to result from their habit of bathing by rubbing against wet leaves rich in natural tannins.

Black-Headed Caique Description

The Black-Headed Caique  is equally striking and highly sought after.

  • Distinct black crown
  • Yellow to orange head
  • Whitish belly
  • Yellow thighs and crissum (area around the cloaca)
  • Green back, wings, and upper tail
  • Blue primary feathers (dark underneath)
  • Greyish-black beak, feet, and legs

As with White-Bellied Caiques, wild Black-Headed Caiques may show chestnut staining on their breast feathers due to frequent bathing habits.

Juvenile Caique Parrots

Young Caique parrots look noticeably different from adults:

  • Brownish or black feathers on the head and nape
  • Yellow feathers mixed into the white belly
  • Greyish legs and feet
  • Dark brown irises

As they mature, juvenile Caiques  lose these off-colored feathers, replacing them with the vibrant orange, yellow, and white plumage seen in adults. Their eye color also changes from dark brown to rust or orange with age.

Gender Identification (Sexing)

Male and female Caiques  have identical plumage, meaning visual sexing is not possible. A DNA test is required to accurately determine the sex of a Caique parrot.
